The Center for International Collaboration, Kochi University, hosted a special lecture by H.E. Mr. Cham Ugala, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Japan, entitled “Japan-Africa Relationship,” for Kochi University students and others on Monday, November 13, 2017, which was attended by about 120 people, including Japanese and non-Japanese students of the university, faculty members and the general public.
In this lecture, he first talked about how Japan had contributed to regional development projects in Africa and the history of how Japan and Ethiopia had built their relationship by, for example, referring to what had been done through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), an initiative launched under the leadership of the Japanese government, and then spoke about Ethiopia’s nationwide efforts for the development of industrial complexes and the rapid and sustainable economic growth the country was achieving. In a question-and-answer session following the lecture, many students in the audience raised their hands to ask questions, showing their strong interest in the country.
Feedback from the audience includes “Although Africa was not really familiar to me, the lecture has given me an opportunity to learn about Ethiopia, bringing the country closer to me,” and “I got the impression that the African region has promising possibilities.”
