Research Concept

Final goal of our department of surgery in Kochi Medical School is to bring up “Academic Surgeon” which means good surgeon with not only excellent surgical skills but also scientific research minds; contribute to surgical patients with better surgical outcomes. Our research concept is to perform translational research with good balance between theory and practice. On the purpose of this achievement, we are trying to do our best “from bench to bedside” and/or “from bedside to bench” at all. As a result, we have been able to publish many English paper more than 250 from Kochi to all over the world in last 10 years.

Research topics

Based on the aforementioned research concept, we are ongoing to promote surgical research regarding surgical skills and perioperative management, cancer research including current chemotherapy, and revolutionary photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) collaborating with Photodynamic Center in Kochi Medical School. Recently, we are promoting clinical nationwide study using national clinical data (NCD) base.
We would like to detail research topics in each group as following.

● Hepato-biliary-pancreatic (HBP) surgery group

  1. Novel perioperative glycemic control using an artificial pancreas in HBP surgery
  2. Novel multidisciplinary therapeutic strategy in surgical patients with HBP cancer
  3. Novel photodynamic diagnosis and therapy in HBP surgery
  4. Nationwide study using NCD in HBP surgery
  5. Novel Kampo medicine based on the systemic biology in HBP surgery

● Gastrointestinal (GI) surgery group

  1. Novel perioperative glycemic control using an artificial pancreas in GI surgery
  2. Novel multidisciplinary therapeutic strategy in surgical patients with GI cancer
  3. Novel photodynamic diagnosis and therapy in GI surgery
  4. Nationwide study using NCD in GI surgery
  5. Novel Kampo medicine based on the systemic biology in GI surgery
  6. Novel basic and clinical study for elucidation of marine medicine
  7. Novel less invasive surgery including robotic, thoraco or laparoscopic surgery
