To maintain our country’s biological resources in a sustainable condition, it is necessary to manage the biological resources and environment in the upstream area of the Kuroshio region. The purpose of this program is to nurture talented people who are capable of developing sustainable management of the Kuroshio environments and ecosystem through the exploration of indigenous biological resources and their effective usage, such as edible algae that have benefits to human health. This program aims to develop students who can contribute to the sustainable maintenance of biological resources of the coastal areas in the Kuroshio region, such as the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan as well as other countries.
In addition to our admission policy, we welcome students who are interested in the following subjects:
This program consists of five subprograms supervised with the collaboration of professors majoring in various study fields of social and natural sciences:
Conduct economic surveys of the local communities in the Kuroshio region
Study the ecosystem and environment of the Kuroshio region.
Learn the methodology of the functional analyses of algae on human health.
Learn food-processing methods and apply them to algae for cooking.
Learn how to send messages to the public and those who are engaged in the maintenance of marine protected areas: establishment of a website on the conditions of implementation and status of their study, organization of symposiums and workshops to achieve mutual understanding between students/researchers and local people, market analysis and marketing research to promote the selling of algae products.
Credits necessary for graduation: 14 units, including
Compulsory Credits (2 units each): 10 units
Elective Credits: take 4 or more credits from 84 open credits
Doctoral course 3 students
All applicants must have an interview with the prospective supervisor to discuss the study program for his/her thesis. If a direct interview is not possible, the interview can be conducted via e-mail.
In case of failure to arrive, no payment will be made to cover the journey to Japan.
Three years as a foreign student beginning October 2018 to September 2021.
Note 1: When arriving and returning home, you must pay the travel fare between the university you attend and the international airport in Japan.
Note 2: Insurance covering your trips to and from Japan will not be provided.
Note 3: When arriving and returning home, the nearest international airport must be used in the nation where you have your nationality.

Note 1: Caution! MEXT has not announced the Applicant Guidelines for this program in 2018 publically. Then the following forms of written applications, in particular 1 & 2, are tentative and might be revised after the announcement.
Note 2: Applicants should send all documents (except reprints of papers and copy of master’s thesis) in the form of pdf via e-mail to applicant’s prospective supervisor in advance. In cases where all documents cannot be prepared by the day, notify the prospective supervisor about progress and the shipping plan of the original documents. 3. Photograph (3 of the same)
Passport-sized (4.5 x 3.5 cm) photographs (showing head and top of shoulders with face and shoulders square on; no hat) taken within 6 months of application date with the applicant’s name and nationality written on the reverse side. One photograph should be attached to the application form, and other two should be enclosed therein.
A letter of recommendation (use the provided Form A) written by the Dean of applicant’s home university, or written by the head of the division concerned for applicants.
5. Certificate of nationality
Copy of passport (the page(s) with name, nationality, date of birth and photo), Family Register or Certificate of Citizenship, etc. Translation and certificate of translation should be attached if your certificate is not in English.
6.Official transcripts of academic record
Official academic transcripts of all graduate and undergraduate courses that comply with the conditions stated in 3-3-1. Proof of top-level academic performance in your university. (Please attach papers with numerical data showing your GPA, class level distinctions such as A, B, C, and/or your ranking among the students in your class.)
7. Official proof of master’s degree
Official certificate confirming a master’s degree or a certified letter from the respective university confirming the expected receipt of a master’s degree that comply with the conditions stated in 3-3-1.
8. Official certificate of graduation from university and official academic transcript
Proof of top-level academic performance in the most recent academic institution you belonged to. (Please attach papers with numerical data showing your GPA, class level distinctions such as A, B, C, and/or your ranking among the students in your class.)
To be submitted by applicants who comply with the conditions stated in 3-3-2 or 3-3-3.
9. Master’s thesis and summary
Include one copy of your master’s thesis or an equivalent research paper along with a summary in English of about 500 words (use the provided Form B).
10.List of publications (books and academic papers) with their reprints
Use the provided Form C.
Note: an attaching document at above “Application form (8. List of Publications)” is commonly used for this document.
11.List of conference & symposium presentations
Use the provided Form D.
Copies of the program and abstract of all presentations in the list must be attached.
Use the provided Form E.
13.Certificate of research activities
Applicants who comply with the conditions stated in 3-3-2 or 3-3-3 must submit the provided Form F signed by the head of the institution.
*Applicants who comply with the conditions stated in 3-3-2 or 3-3-3 should confirm the documents that are necessary for application before submitting them.
Note 1: All forms must be filled out in English using a typewriter or word processor.
Note 2: Submitted documents and forms will not be returned.
Note 3: Incomplete documents or documents arriving at each university after the deadline will not be accepted.
Note 4: The application must be sent by registered mail from the dean or director of the applicant's institution.
Note 5: If the application forms change or are updated, the university will send the new forms. Applicants must submit the new forms.
