The Impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake on Tidal Flat Ecosystems, as Revealed by Nearly 20 Years of Field Research

東日本大震災に伴う大津波は、東北沿岸の広い範囲に大きな被害をもたらしました。高知大学総合科学系複合領域科学部門の三浦収教授・日本大学・東京大学大気海洋研究所・国立環境研究所の合同研究チームは、野外調査と公共データベースを利用して、津波が干潟生物に与えた長期的な影響について調べました。その結果、津波による影響は干潟に訪れる鳥類に対しては限定的であったものの、貝類・甲殻類・多毛類などの底生生物は、津波により甚大な被害を受け、津波前の状態にまで回復するのに10年近くの歳月を要したことが分かりました。また、複数種の底生生物や鳥類を宿主とする寄生虫は、回復までにさらに長い時間がかかることが明らかになりました。複数種の宿主を渡り歩く生活史を持つ寄生虫は、宿主群集の回復なしには安定した個体群を維持することができません。そのため、災害による環境変化の影響を受けやすく、回復までには長い期間が必要であることが考えられます。これらの知見は、近い将来に発生する恐れのある南海トラフ地震とそれに伴う津波による海岸生態系への影響と回復過程の予測に役立つと考えられます。

This study is the first in the world to conduct a long-term investigation into the effects of tsunamis on tidal flat ecosystems, including parasites. The findings were published in the online edition of *Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B*, an international scientific journal published by the Royal Society, on March 5, 2026.
