A research group led by second-year student Mifumi Seto received the Vegetation Society of Japan's "Vegetation Society of Japan Paper Award.

Many prairie plants (gentian, ominae, etc.) that have depended on human disturbance (burning, mowing, etc.) to maintain their populations grow in semi-natural grasslands around farmland, but there is concern that the species diversity* of prairie plants is declining due to abandonment of management and other factors. However, sufficient knowledge has not been obtained on which species with which characteristics (ecological characteristics) are declining.

The research group to which Ms. Seto belongs conducted a botanical survey in 16 satochi areas in Kochi Prefecture to identify species groups of grassland plants whose habitats are declining and their ecological characteristics. They received this award for their excellent research results in the field of conservation vegetation science, which were highly evaluated for their potential for further development.

　農地周辺の半自然草地には人為的攪乱（火入れ・刈り取り等）に依存して個体数を維持してきた草原生植物（リンドウやオミナエシなど）が数多く生育していますが、管理放棄等によって草原生植物の種多様性（※）の低下が懸念されています。しかし、どのような特徴（生態的特性）を持つ種が減少傾向にあるのか、十分な知見が得られていませんでした。

　瀨戸さんが所属している研究グループは、高知県の里地16地域において植物調査を行い、生育地が減少しつつある草地生植物の種群とその生態的特性を明らかにしました。その研究成果が保全植生学として優れており、かつ発展性のある研究内容だった点が高く評価され、本賞を受賞しました（リンク）。
