Kochi University's Philosophy and Fundamental Goals

University Philosophy

Philosophy

In accordance with the spirit of the Fundamental Law of Education and based on a national consensus, our university is committed to fostering individuals capable of contributing to both local and international communities, as well as to promoting the enrichment and advancement of scholarship and research.

Basic Objectives

Aiming to be a university that “supports and transforms the region,” Kochi University serves as a central hub within the regional collaboration platform, contributing to the development of a sustainable local community. While rooted in the region, the university shines as an institution capable of engaging in dialogue, exchange, and collaboration with the world, and carries out educational and research activities to pioneer a prosperous future for human society and the Earth.

Therefore, we have established the following basic objectives.

1. Education

We aim to enhance the quality of education through reforms that address societal needs, while ensuring consistent quality assurance from pre-enrollment through graduation by making learning outcomes transparent and promoting educational IR. Furthermore, by fostering an inclusive educational environment where people from diverse backgrounds can learn collaboratively and by enhancing students’ ability to act independently and engage with the wider world, we will cultivate individuals capable of contributing to the development of both local and international communities.

2. Research

Leveraging our strengths in research focused on the oceans, life sciences, and field science, we will promote the creation of knowledge and value that combines global relevance with contributions to the local community, while fostering scientists with a global perspective. Furthermore, through our research activities, we will work to cultivate an innovative mindset and entrepreneurship, and build an innovation ecosystem that transforms the creation of knowledge into the creation of value.

3. Community Partnerships (Community Collaboration)

As the core of the "Regional Collaboration Platform" in Kochi Prefecture, we will further advance regional collaboration by addressing and resolving local issues, enhancing continuing education for working adults and others, and reforming educational and research organizations to meet local needs. Furthermore, by building a human network that engages all members of the Kochi University community, we will further enrich our contributions to the region.

4. Globalization (Internationalization)

We aim to open our educational and research environments to the local community and the world at large, while fostering the internationalization of our campus and cultivating individuals with a global perspective through the internationalization of our educational programs and the expansion of study abroad opportunities for students. Furthermore, we will support international students in settling within the local community to help shape the future of internationalization in the region, while cultivating globally-minded individuals who also possess a local perspective.
