Essential Accessories for Notebook Computers
Starting in the 2024 academic year, Kochi University will make data science literacy education a university-wide required course. In addition to offering “Information and Data Literacy” in the first semester of the first year and “Introduction to Data Science” in the second semester, lectures will incorporate various e-learning materials using students’ personal computers.Furthermore, students will have many opportunities to use computers and the internet during their studies through the KULAS academic information system, including for faculty communications, course registration, and checking grades. For these reasons, the university requires all students to have a laptop computer.
In the "Information and Data Literacy" course, students will learn the following three introductory topics through lectures, practical training, and exercises using laptop computers.
- Practical Skills in Information and Data Utilization: Acquire the skills to utilize data by employing information technology, the Internet, and AI as tools
- Scientific Understanding of Information: Understanding the basic concepts of information science and information systems (computers, networks, AI, etc.)
- Attitude toward participation in the information society: Recognizing the impact of information technology and AI on our lives and society, and developing a sense of morality and ethics in handling information and data
We also offer online courses such as “Introduction to Data Science,” which covers topics like data science and AI. While computers are essential for these and other specialized courses, many of our buildings are equipped with Wi-Fi to ensure you have internet access even outside of class hours. The Academic Information Infrastructure Library provides a study environment available on weekends and evenings. We hope that by spending their four years in this environment, our new students will gain a true understanding of the information society and develop proper etiquette and ethics.
