Educational and Research Objectives of the Graduate School
The purpose of this program is to teach and conduct research on academic theories and their applications, to explore their depths, and to contribute to the advancement of various academic fields and the improvement of human welfare; furthermore, it aims to cultivate profound knowledge and outstanding abilities necessary for careers requiring a high degree of specialization, thereby contributing to the advancement of culture and the development of society.
Master's program
Humanities and Social Sciences Major
The program aims to cultivate individuals who possess a broad foundation in the humanities and social sciences as well as deep specialized knowledge, and who will contribute to the local community.
Department of Science and Engineering
The aim is to build upon the educational and research traditions in basic sciences and engineering established by the undergraduate program, enabling students to acquire specialized knowledge in the natural and engineering sciences. Students will develop the ability to identify and solve problems independently, thereby fostering highly specialized professionals capable of contributing to regional innovation and the creation of a sustainable society within both local and international communities.In the fields of mathematics, physics, biology, and earth sciences, we educate students on the laws of nature and the methods for elucidating them, thereby fostering highly specialized professionals with a solid foundation in basic sciences.In the fields of applied chemistry, life science and engineering, disaster science, and disaster prevention engineering, we cultivate professionals equipped with cutting-edge scientific knowledge who can tackle regional challenges. In the field of information science, or through collaboration between information science and other fields, we cultivate professionals who possess both mathematical understanding and thinking as well as advanced information technology skills, and who will lead the fields of information science, data science, digital technology, and DX.
Medical Science Major
The program aims to train researchers and educators in the field of medical science who possess highly specialized knowledge and skills through systematic and intensive instruction in a broad range of medical science subjects, while also fostering individuals capable of comprehensively addressing various social issues based on medical science.
Nursing Major
Healthcare professionals are expected to support the public’s right to lead healthy and culturally fulfilling lives. In the Nursing Program, guided by Kochi University’s educational philosophy, we emphasize a “practical, field-oriented approach” to cultivate well-rounded individuals equipped with problem-solving skills grounded in the social skills required of members of society.Furthermore, while aiming to promote health—the most vital aspect of human life—in daily settings, including healthcare settings, we strive to develop logical and creative nursing practitioners, nursing educators, and nursing administrators who possess highly specialized knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive support from the perspective of the individual.
Department of Agriculture, Forestry, and Marine Sciences
The program aims to train highly specialized professionals who can contribute to the sustainable development of human society and local communities by leveraging expertise in agricultural or marine sciences to ensure a stable supply of resources from both land and marine environments; to develop technologies for the development, acquisition, and highly efficient utilization of these resources; and to conserve and restore production environments as well as local and global ecosystems.
Regional Collaborative Studies Major
The objective is to cultivate human resources capable of enhancing regional sustainability by fostering the skills necessary to train successors—a critical need for regional revitalization and future regional regeneration and development—as well as to formulate long-term regional visions and undertake the development of new regional resources and the expansion of new markets.
Sports and Arts Culture Co-Creation Major
The aim is to contribute to the sustainable development of local communities by conducting educational and research activities in the fields of sports and the arts, in collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders, to develop solutions to local challenges.

Applied Natural Sciences Major
Through interdisciplinary collaboration across the fields of basic science, applied science, and science and engineering, we aim to cultivate research and development professionals and highly specialized science and engineering professionals who possess the advanced expertise, knowledge, and skills necessary to drive innovation and facilitate societal implementation within their respective research domains.Furthermore, while promoting interdisciplinary research, the program aims to cultivate professionals who possess a sound understanding of nature and are capable of addressing the challenges facing Kochi Prefecture—such as disaster prevention and mitigation, the protection of natural and ecological environments, and the expansion of local industries—within their respective research fields.
Medical Studies
Guided by an educational philosophy that emphasizes the cultivation of high ethical standards and rich humanity, as well as the acquisition of advanced medical knowledge and skills, we have established an educational and research framework that integrates the paradigms of natural sciences and human sciences from the Kuroshio Region Comprehensive Science Program and the Applied Natural Sciences Program through close collaboration with these programs. Through this framework, we aim to foster individuals who can contribute to the advancement of medicine and healthcare rooted in the regional characteristics of Kochi Prefecture,We aim to train outstanding medical researchers capable of competing on the international stage, as well as excellent clinical specialists (good doctors) with a research mindset. Our goal is to achieve high-level medical research and healthcare with a broad foundation, capable of flexibly addressing diverse social needs.
Kuroshio Region Integrated Science Major
With regard to educational research and human resource development, we have set the following objectives.
- Fostering researchers and educators who possess advanced expertise in their respective fields while also incorporating knowledge and perspectives from other disciplines
- Fostering a new generation of researchers and educators equipped with the new concept of Kuroshio-circulation science and a broad international perspective
- Fostering talent grounded in Kuroshio-region science, equipped with a broad international perspective, and capable of contributing to local industry and the economy
- Providing professional development programs featuring engaging research and educational content for working professionals active across various sectors of society
- To maintain and develop good relations with countries in the Kuroshio Current region of Northeast and Southeast Asia, we actively accept international students and nurture them as researchers and educators.
