Deferred Tuition Payment Plan
Overview of the System
- Under this program, students do not pay tuition while enrolled; instead, they pay later based on their income after graduation. In addition, students can receive a monthly living expense grant of either 20,000 yen or 40,000 yen (optional). (The living expense grant cannot be received on its own.)
- Tuition fees for students accepted into this program will be paid directly to the university by the Japan Student Services Organization and applied toward the eligible students’ tuition.
- Payment of the guarantee fee (enrollment in the institutional guarantee program) is required.
* Please note that if you utilize this program, you will not be eligible to receive a Type 1 scholarship. (You may apply for a Type 2 Scholarship.)
Target academic levels
Master's Degree Programs (Academic and Professional Degree Programs)
Eligible individuals
Applicants who meet all of the following criteria
- Individuals who entered a domestic graduate school in fiscal year 2024 or later
- Individuals who applied through their school at their own request
- Applicants who meet the same financial and academic criteria as those for the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Type 1 Scholarship (hereinafter referred to simply as the "Type 1 Scholarship") for master's degree students, which provides a monthly stipend of 50,000 yen or 88,000 yen
- Applicants who have no grounds for being ineligible to receive a Type 1 Scholarship, such as being in arrears on the repayment of a previously received scholarship
The amount of tuition fees eligible for deferred payment (hereinafter referred to as "eligible tuition fees")
- Tuition fees charged by the university, up to a maximum of 535,800 yen per year
* As a type of Type 1 Scholarship (interest-free loan scholarship), the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides a loan consisting of tuition fees plus a guarantee fee (the loan amount is the sum of the tuition fee and the guarantee fee; this loan amount is hereinafter referred to as the “Tuition Support Grant”).
※ Payment of the guarantee fee (enrollment in the institutional guarantee program) is mandatory.
※ If the amount billed to the student falls below the above upper limit—including cases where the university’s own tuition exemption has already been individually applied to the student (at the time of the initial tuition billing)—the amount billed shall be considered the eligible tuition for support. (Can be combined with tuition exemptions.)
The amount that can be received separately as support for living expenses, etc. (hereinafter referred to as the "Living Expenses Scholarship")
- Students can choose an amount starting from 20,000 yen or 40,000 yen per month (interest-free)
* JASSO will disburse funds directly to students.
* You may choose not to receive the Living Expenses Scholarship.
* You cannot apply for the Living Expenses Scholarship without also applying for the Tuition Support Grant.
* If you receive the Tuition Support Grant, you are not eligible for the Type 1 Scholarship.
* You may apply for the Type 2 Scholarship regardless of whether you receive the Tuition Support Grant or the Living Expenses Scholarship.
* Payment of the guarantee fee (enrollment in the institutional guarantee program) is mandatory. As with the handling of guarantee fees for Type 1 Scholarships, the guarantee fee will be deducted from the amounts listed above.
Overview of Repayment to JASSO After Graduation
- Repayments to JASSO will be made via direct debit based on post-graduation income until the total amount of the tuition support grant (the sum of eligible tuition fees and guarantee fees) and the living expenses scholarship has been repaid in full.
Other
- As with Type 1 scholarships, recipients are subject to annual eligibility reviews and may be eligible for repayment exemptions based on exceptional academic performance.
- The Japan Student Services Organization will determine whether applications can be withdrawn after submission, whether support can be terminated mid-year, and other operational details.
