Kuroshio Zone Seminar / DC Seminar: "Ecology for Reducing Sea Lions, Increasing Tuna, and Eating Pacific Saury"
Date:
Kuroshio Science Program is pleased to announce the Kuroshio Region Seminar/DC Seminar titled “Ecology for Reducing Sea Lions, Increasing Tuna, and Eating Pacific Saury,” featuring Professor Hiroyuki Matsuda of Yokohama National University as the guest lecturer.
Overfishing of eels and tuna is currently a serious problem, and it’s even making headlines in the newspapers. You might think that marine resources as a whole are being depleted. While overfishing of high-value fish is indeed a serious issue, not all fish stocks are being depleted.Pacific saury production has been subject to production adjustments for some time. Even though there are plenty of them, overfishing leads to a situation where fishermen lose money despite a bountiful catch. Steller sea lions were also overhunted for their fur and meat and were once an endangered species, but they are now recovering, and the damage they cause to fisheries has become a more serious problem. Since the economic and cultural practices for utilizing the increased sea lion population have not been passed down, it is difficult to manage their numbers through hunting. The same is true for other wildlife.
The theory of sustainable wildlife use was developed in the field of fisheries science. It is known as adaptive management. In this session, using sea lions, bluefin tuna, and Pacific saury as examples, we will introduce the theory and practice of fisheries resource management aimed at protecting what needs to be protected and utilizing what should be utilized.
