Special Lecture: "The Nagoya Protocol: Approaches to Access to Genetic Resources and the Sharing of Benefits"

Date:

We will hold a special lecture titled "The Nagoya Protocol: Approaches to Access to Genetic Resources and the Sharing of Benefits" on the following date.

Since the Nagoya Protocol entered into force in 2014, the issue of access to genetic resources and the sharing of benefits (ABS) has attracted significant international attention; for life science researchers in particular, it is directly related to research methods and the handling of research results. The management of marine genetic resources is even more complex and continues to be debated both domestically and internationally.
In this special lecture, we will explain the fundamental issues of the Nagoya Protocol, followed by separate explanations focusing on marine genetic resources and agricultural genetic resources. For marine genetic resources, we will discuss their relationship with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and present examples from Japan (including Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology). For agricultural genetic resources, we will cover their relationship with the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) and present several examples from Japan.

The seminar is open not only to university members but also to the general public. We look forward to your participation.
