Kickoff Symposium: “Establishing a Four-Dimensional Integrated Kuroshio Region Resource Science—The Dawn of a New Era in Comprehensive Marine Resource Management”
Date:
We will hold the kickoff symposium for the "Creation of a 4-Dimensional Integrated Kuroshio Zone Resource Science" project—an interdisciplinary initiative involving Faculty —on the following date.
In addition to presentations on education and research by faculty members engaged in marine research, the symposium will feature a discussion on how to apply the findings of this project to human resource development.
At our university, faculty members have long been conducting specialized research centered on the theme of “the ocean.” However, following the revision of the “Basic Plan for the Ocean” in 2013 based on the Basic Act on the Ocean, and given the growing importance of “marine resource development” and “integrated ocean management,” we have launched the “Establishment of 4-Dimensional Integrated Kuroshio Region Resource Science” project this academic year. This project aims to comprehensively understand the various resources held within the Kuroshio Current zone flowing off the coast of Kochi Prefecture, and to sustainably utilize them while maintaining and managing them. It is a research and educational initiative focused on “integrated ocean management” that enables the prediction of future resource dynamics by elucidating and understanding these resources from a comprehensive perspective across various disciplines, utilizing a four-dimensional scale (1st dimension: from the coast to the open sea; 2nd dimension: the Kuroshio Current axis;3rd dimension: water depth, 4th dimension: time). By elucidating and understanding these resources through a comprehensive perspective that integrates various fields, the project conducts research and education in “integrated marine management” to enable the prediction of future resource dynamics.
