In Kochi Prefecture, mines such as the Shirataki Mine (copper) and the Anai Mine (manganese) were once in operation,
and while they contributed significantly to regional development by supplying metal raw materials, they have all since closed down.
Currently, limestone mines such as the Torigata, Katsumori, Tosa, and Shirakidani mines are in operation,
producing 12% of the nation’s total limestone shipments. For Japan, which lacks domestic metal resources, seabed mineral resources are expected to become an important source of supply in the future. We will introduce the research on the genesis of seabed mineral resources and the development of exploration technologies being Science Research Center the Kochi University Marine Science Research Center.
