The Kuroshio Zone Science International Workshop, titled "Research on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in Local Communities," will be held at the Asakura Campus on February 19, 2019.
In recent years, we have been examining how diverse stakeholders in local communities can participate in integrated ocean management—a concept promoted through initiatives such as the Basic Plan for the Ocean to comprehensively advance the use and conservation of the ocean—and how to implement conservation and management measures tailored to local conditions.We will explore approaches to comprehensive coastal management by local communities, focusing on topics such as the Philippines’ experience in establishing marine protected areas and promoting community-led coastal management; the natural restoration project in Tatsukushi, Tosashimizu City, which successfully rehabilitated coral communities devastated by the Southwest Typhoon; and the environmental conditions of the nesting beaches for sea turtles in Kochi Prefecture.
Speakers will include three researchers from the Philippines—led by the Director of the 2nd Regional Office of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources under the Department of Agriculture—as well as Fumito Iwase from the Shikoku Sea and Marine Life Research Laboratory and Associate Professor Tomoki Saito from the Marine Biology Education and Research Facility at Kochi University. A general discussion will follow the presentations.
