Kochi Society for Humanities and Social Sciences: 2018 Symposium “Art and Politics: What Is the ‘Appropriate Distance’ Between Art Practice and Cultural Administration in Local Communities?”

Date:

On Saturday, March 16, 2019, the Kochi Society for Humanities and Social Sciences will host its 2018 Symposium on Art and Politics, titled “What Is the ‘Appropriate Distance’ Between Art Practices and Cultural Administration in Local Communities?”

Amid growing attention to the “diverse values” inherent in the arts, there is a growing movement to position the arts as a resource for “regional revitalization” and “community revitalization.” As these initiatives, driven primarily by local governments, gain momentum, the nature of artistic practice within local communities is being reexamined. In this symposium, we will examine the “Arts Council”—a concept that has garnered significant attention in recent years—and explore the idea of a “balanced distance” between artistic practice in local communities and cultural administration and policy.
