The Future of Sewerage Systems from Kochi: The 3rd Symposium, “Sustainable Sewerage Systems for the Future, Spreading from Kochi”

Since fiscal year 2017, Kochi University has been hosting symposiums in collaboration with Kochi Prefecture under the theme “The Future of Sewerage Systems: Insights from Kochi.”Kochi Prefecture is often referred to as a “pioneer in addressing challenges” because its population is declining 15 years ahead of the national average and its fiscal situation is severe. Due to these circumstances, the penetration rate of sewer systems—a fundamental piece of national infrastructure—ranks among the bottom three in the country. However, looking at the situation from a different perspective, we believe that the initiatives undertaken in Kochi Prefecture, which faces these severe challenges, can be of use to the rest of the country, where similar difficult social conditions are expected in 15 years. With this in mind, we launched this symposium to share Kochi Prefecture’s efforts.
In the first year, fiscal year 2017, under the theme “Innovative Water Treatment Technologies for Sustainable Sewerage,” we introduced new sewage treatment technologies originating from Kochi, such as the “Two-Point DO Control System for the Oxidation Ditch Method” and “Non-Aerated Circulating Water Treatment Technology,” which our university developed and implemented through industry-government-academia collaboration.In the second year (FY2018), under the theme “Kochi’s Sewerage System: Confronting Disasters,” we introduced advanced initiatives based on the experiences of Kochi Prefecture, a region prone to natural disasters.
In the third year (FY2019), we will co-host a symposium titled “Sustainable Future Sewerage Systems Expanding from Kochi” with Kochi Prefecture and Kochi City.
