◆Inspiration & Excitement in Science: Welcome to the University Lab! KAKENHI: "From Genes to Drugs: Let's Learn How to Make Medicines Using Microorganisms!"

Date:

From Saturday, July 31 to Sunday, August 1, 2021, the Kochi University Center for Integrated Marine Core Research will host "Inspiration & Excitement in Science: Welcome to the University Lab"—a KAKENHI-funded event titled "From Genes to Drugs: Let’s Learn How to Make Medicines Using Microorganisms!"

This program is designed for high school students and begins with an introductory course in microbiology, covering basic knowledge of microorganisms as well as the production and applications of naturally occurring compounds derived from them. Students will then conduct experiments to culture bacteria found on their own bodies, gaining hands-on experience with how humans coexist with various microorganisms.Additionally, participants will observe bacteria that produce natural compounds, conduct genetic experiments related to the production of these natural compounds, and perform DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests. Through these lectures and hands-on activities, students will gain a deeper understanding of bacteria as producers of useful compounds and learn about the importance and applications of microorganisms. We encourage anyone interested to join us.
