◆Inspiration & Excitement in Science: Welcome to the University Lab! We are hosting a KAKENHI-funded event titled “Can Life Be Born from Dried Sperm and Cells!?—Let’s Learn About New Technologies for Preserving Mammalian Genetic Resources.”

Date:

We will be holding "Hirameki☆Tokimeki Science: Welcome to the University Lab"—a KAKENHI-funded program designed to help high school students experience the excitement of science—titled "Can Life Be Born from Dried Sperm and Cells!?—Let’s Learn About New Technologies for Preserving Mammalian Genetic Resources."

Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Science is developing conservation technologies to safely and securely maintain the genetic resources of mammals whose diversity is threatened by human activities, natural disasters, infectious diseases, and climate change associated with global warming, with the aim of contributing to the conservation of mammalian diversity. To this end, using the rare Japanese beef cattle breed known as Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Science (Kochi strain, or Tosa Akaushi)—which is raised Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Science —as a model animal, we are currently investigating methods for the preservation of somatic and germ cells, as well as individual regeneration techniques, using freeze-drying technology. In particular, regarding research using sperm—a type of germ cell—we have recently succeeded in producing the world’s first calf derived from a fertilized egg created from freeze-dried sperm. Our program is designed to convey the appeal and fascination of this research to high school students through hands-on activities as well as lectures covering the process that led to this success and future developments.
