International Symposium on Climate Change to Be Held—Kickoff Event for the Warm Climate Change Research Exchange Hub Led by Kochi University
Date:
We will hold the kickoff international symposium for the “Research Hub for Climate Change Studies in Warm Periods, Centered on the International Marine Science Drilling School,” which has been selected for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science’s Research Hub Formation Program, from Wednesday, October 22, to Friday, October 24.While we continue to experience daily reminders of the progression of global warming, such as recent heatwaves and their increasing duration, understanding the actual climate changes that occurred during warm periods in Earth’s history and mapping those change processes is an indispensable research approach for identifying the causes of these climate changes and predicting future trends.
Led by the International Marine Core Research Center at Kochi University—a geological archive documenting past climate change that stores and analyzes marine cores from around the world—a "Hub for Research Exchange on Climate Change During Warm Periods" will be established at Kochi University to deepen collaboration with research institutions in Japan and four European countries, thereby promoting international joint research.Furthermore, to foster young researchers who will play a leading role in promoting international collaborative research, the university will utilize programs such as summer schools currently being held in European countries and at Kochi University.
Approximately 90 participants from Japan and abroad (including online attendees) will take part in this symposium, featuring 49 presentations on climate change during warm periods and the development of young talent. Fifteen participants from Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, France, Spain, South Korea, and New Zealand will attend in person. On Wednesday, October 22, the venue will be the Kochi Castle History Museum (Hall), and on the following day, Thursday, October 23, the venue will move to the International Marine Core Research Center at Kochi University, where presentations of research findings and a tour of the core repository will be held.In addition, on Friday, October 24, a geological field trip will be conducted to visit geosites in the Muroto Geopark and sake breweries, promoting international research exchange in Kochi.
