◆Lecturer Goichiro Uramoto of the Interdisciplinary Research Division, Department of Education and Research, Division of Integrated Sciences, has received the Japan Society of Sedimentology Paper Award
Release Date:
Lecturer Goichiro Uramoto of the Interdisciplinary Research Division, Department of Education and Research (affiliated with the Center for Integrated Marine Core Research) has been awarded the Japan Sedimentological Society Paper Award in recognition of his research paper contributing to the advancement of sedimentology. This award honors Society members who have published outstanding research papers related to sedimentology in domestic and international journals.
The award-winning paper, titled “Significant contribution of subseafloor microparticles to the global manganese budget” (Uramoto et al., 2019, Nature Communications, vol. 10, article no. 400). This paper discovered the presence of vast quantities of iron-manganese oxide microparticles (microscopic manganese particles) in deep-sea sediments in the open ocean (estimated at approximately 10²⁹ particles across the entire subseafloor),This seminal paper not only proposed a new model for their formation but also established that manganese—whose fate beneath the seafloor had previously been unclear—is actually retained in the form of these fine particles. It has been recognized as having had a significant impact not only on sedimentology but also on a wide range of fields, including mineralogy, ore deposit science, and material cycling.
