At the "36th Annual Conference of the Chugoku-Shikoku Branch of the Japan Society of Wood Science and Technology," held on September 19, 2025, Ryosuke Nakamura, a first-year graduate student in the Department of Agricultural, Forestry, and Marine Sciences, received the Research Presentation Award (Oral Presentation Category).
This award is presented to the most outstanding young presenter.
Mr. Nakamura presented on the topic of “Preparation of Water- and Oil-Repellent Paper Using Natural Ingredients,” discussing the effects of adding yuzu peel—which had previously been discarded—to paper on its water- and oil-repellent properties. The research demonstrated that adding yuzu peel to paper confers high water- and oil-repellency, and further identified effective measures to address the issue of deteriorating water quality in paper mill wastewater caused by the use of yuzu peel. These findings demonstrate that discarded yuzu peel is a viable alternative to petroleum-based water- and oil-repellent agents, and the proposal of new applications was highly praised.
