Children’s Well-Being in the Context of Inclusion and Digitalization
—Results of a survey of 2,158 elementary and junior high school students in rural areas of Japan—
Professor Junichi Hirose of the Department of Collaborative Regional Education in the Faculty of Integrated Sciences at Kochi University, with the cooperation of the Kochi Prefectural Board of Education, conducted a survey of 2,158 elementary and junior high school students to analyze how experiences of diversity in school, a spirit of inquiry, a tendency toward kindness and care, and the use of digital devices are related to children’s subjective well-being.Regarding children’s well-being, curiosity, and tendencies toward kindness and care, differences were observed among the four categories of Inclusion, Exclusion, Assimilation, and Differentiation.
These findings suggest that creating an educational environment where children from diverse backgrounds can grow in their own unique ways may be crucial to improving their well-being. This study provides scientific insights that can contribute to enhancing children’s well-being in today’s society, where education is becoming increasingly digitized and diversified, and is expected to contribute to future educational practices and policy development.
This study was published in the online edition of the international academic journal *Education Sciences* on September 18, 2025.
