Professor Haruo Yamaguchi Faculty of Agriculture and Marine Science has received the "Award for Advancement in Fisheries Science" from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science.

Release Date:

Faculty of Agriculture and Marine ScienceProfessor Haruo Yamaguchi has received the Reiwa 7 Fisheries Science Progress Award from the Japanese Society of Fisheries Science.
Professor Yamaguchi was recognized for his outstanding achievements in physiological and ecological research on the mechanisms underlying the occurrence of marine microalgae, which have significantly contributed to the advancement of fisheries science.
The award ceremony was held on March 27, Reiwa 8.

Reason for the Award
Dr. Yamaguchi elucidated the influence of environmental factors on the proliferation of harmful and toxic microalgae based on precise culture experiments and field surveys, thereby making it possible to predict the depth, timing, and location of red tide blooms. He also revealed a new nutrient acquisition mechanism in which many red tide algae utilize an enzyme called phosphatase to directly break down organic phosphorus—in addition to inorganic phosphorus—and use it as a phosphorus source.By demonstrating that organic phosphorus contained in polluted coastal seawater contributes to the occurrence of red tides, he has revolutionized our understanding of the mechanisms underlying red tide events and phosphorus cycling. This series of research achievements is expected to have a ripple effect across a wide range of fields, including fisheries science, environmental science, and ecology, and was deemed worthy of the Fisheries Science Progress Award.
