Approximately 5 to 10 percent of urothelial carcinomas are upper urinary tract urothelial carcinomas (UTUCs), such as renal pelvis and ureteral cancers. Although urinary cytology is widely used for the diagnosis of UTUCs, its sensitivity may not always be sufficient. Furthermore, diagnosis may require invasive tests or procedures, making the development of simpler, non-invasive diagnostic aids a key challenge.
Kochi University ( Medical SchoolMedical School Hospital ) has introduced the UF-5000 fully automated urine cytology analyzer. This instrument is equipped with the research parameter “Atyp.C,” which detects cells with a high nucleus-to-cytoplasm ratio. While there have been reports on Atyp.C in relation to bladder cancer, its diagnostic utility for UTUC has not been fully evaluated.
In this study, we examined the diagnostic utility of Atyp.C for UTUC and reported that Atyp.C can achieve detection sensitivity comparable to that of conventional urine cytology, and that combining the two methods is expected to improve detection sensitivity.
Although Atyp.C does not have sufficient sensitivity, it is a noninvasive diagnostic marker that does not require additional invasive procedures, and it is expected to find clinical application as a new marker to aid in the diagnosis of UTUC.
