Graduate SchoolKuroshio Science ProgramSakura Morimitsu, a technical staff member in the 3rd-year class at Marine Core Research Institute(MaCRI), won the Poster Award ( 1st place) at the 19th International Kuroshio Science Symposium, held at the University of Santo Tomas-Legazpi in the Philippines from Wednesday, August 2, Reiwa 8, to Thursday, September 3, Reiwa 8.
Mr. Morimitsu gave a poster presentation titled “Transparency Mechanism of Alkali-Treated Sulfated Cellulose Pulp Sheets through Submicron Network Formation.” Cellulose is the main component of wood and is commonly used as a raw material for paper. In recent years, transparent cellulose materials have been produced through mechanical fiber dispersion, a process that is costly and energy-intensive. In contrast, Ms. Morimitsu’s research developed transparent cellulose materials using only inexpensive and environmentally friendly chemical treatments of wood pulp; her work was highly praised for its academic value, leading to her receipt of this award.
This research was supported by the Sasakawa Scientific Research Grant and the Kochi University Medachi Research Project.
