Digital Archive Map of Disaster Memorials Released (Marine Core Research Center)

Release Date:

Goichiro Uramoto, a Specially Appointed Assistant Professor at the Center for Integrated Research on Oceanic Cores, has developed and published online the “Digital Archive Map of Disaster Memorials” as part of a project to build a database of Nankai Earthquake and Tsunami Memorials. This initiative utilizes 3D reconstruction technology and is a collaborative effort with the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED).

This map provides comprehensive information—including locations and the content of inscriptions—on disaster memorials erected throughout Japan, particularly along the coast of Kochi Prefecture, to commemorate earthquake and flood disasters. The locations of these disaster memorials often mark the points where past tsunamis or floods reached, and the very fact that they were erected at those specific sites holds historical value. Furthermore, the inscriptions on these memorials serve as important records of the damage caused by major earthquakes and typhoons in the past, and they also function as symbols that serve as a warning against future large-scale natural disasters.

We are currently featuring disaster memorials in Kochi Prefecture, Tokushima Prefecture, and the Tohoku region, and we plan to gradually add more content to expand our offerings.

We hope that many people will use this map as a starting point for learning about past disasters.
