◆We held an exhibition and event for the Purple Ribbon Campaign (a movement to eliminate violence against women)

Release Date:

From November 12 to 25, which marked the "Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women (Purple Ribbon)" Week designated by the Cabinet Office, Kochi University organized exhibitions and events as part of a university-wide initiative.

On November 22, the Asakura Campus Library hosted a session for students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community, featuring Akiko Hashimoto of Realize YOKOHAMA as the guest speaker. The session focused on self-defense for both mind and body (based on her book *Self-Defense*). It provided an opportunity for both men and women to learn about communication strategies designed to prevent anyone from becoming either a victim or a perpetrator.

On November 23, we held a Wen-Do self-defense workshop led by the same instructor at our employee welfare facility.Wen-Do is a self-defense program for women developed in Toronto, Canada, in 1972. Students and faculty members learned practical physical techniques as well as interpersonal strategies to protect themselves from violence before it occurs. The session included many relatively simple methods, such as shouting loudly and intimidating an attacker to escape, allowing everyone to learn in a cheerful and enjoyable atmosphere.

As part of our on-campus activities, we held an exhibition of books and materials at the Asakura Campus Library. We set up a Christmas tree and purple ribbons, and a total of 142 people who support the Purple Ribbon Campaign helped decorate the tree with ribbons. At the Faculty of Community Collaboration building, students studying gender studies, along with faculty and staff, collaborated to organize an exhibition.

The Office for the Promotion of Gender Equality is committed to fostering a well-being-oriented environment on campus. To ensure that everyone can focus on their studies and work with peace of mind, we will continue to provide opportunities to address this issue by hosting book exhibitions and workshops.
