◆Regarding the Presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation for Life-Saving Actions
Release Date:
On Saturday, September 27, while visiting the Osaka Kansai Expo as part of a fieldwork course for the Faculty of Regional Collaboration, four second-year students—Takuma Sugano, Shogo Ikeda, Haruto Oishi, and Kosuke Yamashita—assisted in rescuing a visitor who had collapsed at the venue. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, they performed initial first aid, including chest compressions, operating an AED, and contacting the appropriate authorities. Takuma Sugano, in particular, remained calm as he checked the victim’s pulse and used the AED correctly.
In recognition of this, on Sunday, October 5, Mr. Sugano was presented with a certificate of appreciation from the Konohana Fire Station of the Osaka City Fire Department and the Crisis Management Bureau of the Public Interest Incorporated Association for the 2025 Japan International Exposition.
The following is a comment from Takuma Sugano.
I am honored to have received this certificate of appreciation. You never know when a person’s heart might stop. If nothing is done and we simply wait for the ambulance to arrive before beginning treatment, the survival rate is extremely low. However, if bystanders perform CPR or administer first aid using an AED, the survival rate can be significantly improved.
I didn’t save this person’s life on my own. Thanks to the cooperation of many people—including my friends who were at the Expo with me, the nurses and doctors who were there at the time, and the security guard who brought the AED—we were able to save a life. Thank you all so much.
CPR involves pressing down on the chest of a person who has collapsed by about 2 inches. To be honest, I was really scared while doing it. But at the time, rather than worrying about that, I was driven by a sense of duty to save the life of the person right in front of me, and my body just moved on its own.
"It is people who save people." I want everyone to keep this in mind.
In addition, with the cooperation of the Kochi Prefectural Branch of the Japanese Red Cross Society, the Faculty of Regional Collaboration conducts training sessions for first-year students during class time on topics such as chest compressions and AED operation.
