At the “37th Research Presentation Meeting of the Chugoku-Shikoku Branch of the Japan Society of Wood Science and Technology,” held on September 11, Reiwa 8, Ryosuke Nakamura, a second-year student at Graduate SchoolAgriculture and Marine Science Program , gave a presentation titled “The Effect of Pretreatment on the Preparation of Water-Repellent and Oil-Resistant Paper Using Yuzu Peel” and received the Research Presentation Award (Oral Presentation Category). This award is presented to the most outstanding young oral presenter.
Mr. Nakamura presented on the effects of adding yuzu peel—which had previously been discarded—to paper on its water-repellency and oil resistance. The study revealed that water-repellency and oil resistance vary depending on the pretreatment conditions of the yuzu peel. Furthermore, by optimizing these pretreatment conditions, the study demonstrated that it is possible to achieve high levels of both water-repellency and oil resistance.Furthermore, the study demonstrated that this approach reduces the deterioration of water quality in paper mill wastewater. These findings indicate that waste yuzu peel is an effective alternative to petroleum-based water-repellent and oil-resistant agents, and the proposal for a new application of waste yuzu peel was highly praised.
