Release Date:

We are pleased to announce that a research and development project proposed by Professor Boaz Jakin ( Faculty of Science and TechnologyDepartment of Information Science ) has been selected under the Strategic Basic Research Program (Sakigake) of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).

・ Faculty of Science and TechnologyDepartment of Information Science Professor Boaz Jakin
Research Area: “Pioneering the Convergence of Information and Physics Linked by Light (Optical Convergence)”
Research Project Title: “Optical Reservoir Utilizing Material-Intrinsic Chaos”

[Research Overview]
Optical computing is expected to enable low-power information processing. However, current optical computing relies on external devices for memory and control mechanisms, and it is not yet possible to perform computations using materials alone. This research focuses on organic materials in which memory, nonlinear transformation, and chaos control all arise within the material itself through light irradiation alone. We aim to establish a new principle of optical information processing in which the material itself performs computations, while also pursuing applications in energy-efficient AI technologies. It is expected that this research will pave the way for a new foundation of information processing in which the material itself performs computational functions, while leveraging the advantages of light—namely, low power consumption and high parallelism.

[What is the Sakigake Program?]
The Sakigake Program aims to promote pioneering, objective basic research that is original, challenging, and expected to achieve internationally high standards, with the goal of overcoming critical challenges facing Japan. It seeks to be a source of scientific and technological innovation that drives social and economic transformation by creating, ahead of the rest of the world, creative and innovative technological seeds (new technology seeds) based on new scientific knowledge.
