Building Bridges Along the Kuroshio Region: Advancing Multidisciplinary Science and Stewardship Through International Collaboration

Introduction

The 19th International Kuroshio Science Symposium, themed “Building Bridges Along the Kuroshio Region: Advancing Multidisciplinary Science and Stewardship Through International Collaboration,” marks the first time that the University of Santo Tomas–Legazpi will host this prestigious international gathering.

The symposium brings together scholars, researchers, practitioners, policymakers, educators, and community partners from various disciplines to share knowledge, present innovations, and strengthen international collaboration in advancing sustainable development and stewardship within the Kuroshio region and beyond.

Hosting this symposium provides the University with a strategic opportunity to showcase academic excellence, strengthen global partnerships, and reinforce its leadership in research, innovation, and community engagement.

Thematic Sessions

The symposium welcomes interdisciplinary contributions aligned with, but not limited to, the following thematic areas:

  1. Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Conservation
  2. Sustainable Fisheries and Blue Economy Innovations
  3. Governance, Resource Use Rights, and Policy Frameworks
  4. Food Security, Adaptive Capacity, and Community Resilience
  5. Faith, Ethics, and Integral Ecology in Ocean Stewardship
  6. Life-long Learning for Sustainable Development
  7. Nursing and Healthcare Sustainability in Coastal Communities
  8. History and Culture

 

General Guidelines for Submission

  1. All submissions must be written in English.
  2. Submitted abstracts and papers must be original and should not have been previously published or currently under review elsewhere.
  3. Authors may submit multiple abstracts; however, only one abstract per presenting author may be selected for oral presentation.
  4. At least one author of each accepted abstract must register for the symposium and present the paper or poster during the conference.
  5. Full papers must comply with the prescribed conference format and submission guidelines.
  6. Submission of abstracts, full papers, and presentation materials shall be made through the official Conference Submission Portal (details to be announced).

  • Length: 250–300 words
  • File Format: MS Word (.docx) or PDF
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12 pt
  • Spacing: Single-spaced

Authors are encouraged to organize their abstracts using the following format:

  • Keywords (4–5)

Full Paper Guidelines

Accepted presenters may be invited to submit full papers following the structure below:

  1. Title: Concise and informative (maximum of 20 words)
  2. Author(s) and Affiliation(s): Include institutional affiliation and corresponding author’s contact information
  3. Abstract: 200–250 words
  4. Keywords: 4–5 keywords
  5. Introduction: Background, rationale, objectives, and significance of the study
  6. Literature Review: Theoretical framework, related studies, or industry context
  7. Methodology: Research design, data gathering procedures, and analytical methods
  8. Results and Discussion: Presentation and interpretation of findings, including relevance to the conference theme
  9. Conclusions and Implications: Contributions to research, policy, sustainability, and practice
  10. References

Review and Acceptance Process

All submissions will undergo peer review based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the symposium theme and thematic sessions
  • Originality and significance of the study
  • Clarity of objectives, methodology, and findings
  • Quality of writing and organization

Authors of accepted submissions will be notified via email. Accepted abstracts may be scheduled for:

  • Oral Presentation
  • Poster Presentation
  • Both Oral and Poster Presentation (if applicable)

Ryuga-do Limestone Cave Tour

Excursion (Ryuga-do Limestone Cave Tour)

Ryuga-do Cave is one of the three largest limestone caves in Japan. This cave is unique in that ruins from approximately 2,000 years ago were discovered. The total length of this cave is 4,000 m, but an approximately 1,000 m long route has been developed. We will take visitors on a tour of the cave, explaining the cave organisms and the stalactite dating results, which are currently underway at Kochi University.

Thank You for Your Publicizing of and Participation in the Symposium

The 14th International Symposium on Kuroshio Science, held on Saturday, November 13 and Sunday, November 14, 2021, was successfully completed with a total of 287 participants from 63 institutions and universities in six countries. As related events, 65 participants from three countries attended the PHILAPKUS alumni meeting for Filipinos of the Kuroshio Science Program held on Monday, November 15, and 43 participants from four countries attended the Regional Revitalization Forum (How Does Regional Revitalization Confront Aging and Declining Populations? ~The Challenge of the Regional University~) research report meeting held on Wednesday, November 17, where lively discussions were held. we would like to express my gratitude to all those who helped in publicizing and presenting at this symposium.
