Research findings by a group including Assoc. Prof. Tomoyo Okumura of the Kochi Institute for Core Sample Research were published in Nature Microbiology on January 17, 2024.

　The research group discovered a novel RNA virus genome from thermoacidophilic microbial communities in hot acidic springs in the Unzen and Kirishima fumarolic areas and named it Hot spring RNA virus (HsRV). The finding suggests the possible existence of a third RNA virus realm distinct from the two known RNA virus realms.

　海洋コア国際研究所の奥村知世准教授らの研究成果が、2024年1月17日付でNature Microbiologyに掲載されました。

　本研究では、雲仙および霧島の噴気地帯の高温酸性泉に存在する高度好熱性微生物集団から、全く新奇なRNAウイルスのゲノムを発見し、Hot spring RNA virus（HsRV）と命名しました。既知の2つのRNAウイルス界とは異なる第3のRNAウイルス界の存在可能性も示されています。
