Research by Prof. Osamu Miura of the Multidisciplinary Science Division, Kochi University, and collaborators from Nihon University, the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute of the University of Tokyo, and the National Institute for Environmental Studies was published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

　Using long-term field surveys and public databases, the research team examined the long-term effects of the tsunamis caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake on tidal-flat organisms. The study showed that the tsunami effects on birds visiting tidal flats were limited, whereas benthic organisms such as mollusks, crustaceans, and polychaetes were severely affected and required nearly ten years to recover to pre-tsunami conditions. Parasites using multiple host species required an even longer period for recovery.

　高知大学総合科学系複合領域科学部門の三浦収教授、日本大学、東京大学大気海洋研究所、国立環境研究所の合同研究チームの研究成果が、英国王立協会が発行する国際科学雑誌Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B電子版に掲載されました。

　本研究では、野外調査と公共データベースを利用して、東日本大震災に伴う津波が干潟生物に与えた長期的な影響を調べました。その結果、津波による影響は干潟に訪れる鳥類に対しては限定的であった一方、貝類・甲殻類・多毛類などの底生生物は甚大な被害を受け、津波前の状態にまで回復するのに10年近くを要したことが示されました。また、複数種の底生生物や鳥類を宿主とする寄生虫は、回復までにさらに長い時間がかかることが明らかになりました。
