The Department of Neurology of Kochi Medical School was constructed as a part of the Department of Geriatric disease in 1978. Since 2013, Professor Hirokazu Furuya became Vice-professor of Geriatric department and founded Department of Neurology in 2016 as a Professor.

Our department provides expertise in the evaluation and treatment of the entire spectrum of neurologic diseases, such as, Headache, Movement disorders (Parkinson’s Disease and related Movement Disorders), Multiple Sclerosis, Epilepsy and Neuromuscular disease (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS) and Muscular Dystrophy.

Research areas

Our research programs are trying to solve the puzzle of Neurological Disorders especially in Parkinson disease and related disorders and incurable Neuromuscular disorders, metabolic neurological disease and neuro-degenerative disorders using iPS cells in collaboration with Kumamoto University and National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry.
